Game Over

The very last essay as an Aber student was submitted today and I’ve got mixed feelings. Yes, I’m excited about what the world is going to give me but I’m also afraid. I know that once I’m settled into a job, I’ll be fine but it’s the not knowing what I’m going to do when I move back to London permanently and leave my uni days behind. It’s a real scary thought.

Aber Inksiders!

Thanks to my work and connections at Aber Ink, which as I’ve mentioned before is the English and Creative Writing newsletter, this blog makes an appearance in the current issue, which will be available in the English department foyer until September, I believe. My friend Lauren wrote the article about blogging and asked me to contribute half a page on being a student blogger in Aber and it’s now all in print! However, there is a touch of sadness surrounding this issue as it’s quite possibly our very last one, unless some lovely new people come along. We are now five third years who are all leaving very soon and we would love a bright young team to take over from us, so please show your interests. For anyone reading this, who is coming to Aber as an English student next year and if you have any interest in journalism, publishing or even photography, don’t hesitate to contact us at Aber Ink on aberink@hotmail.co.uk.

Writing Project finished!

I have to show you all this!
002

It’s my dissertation all done and handed in! Big thank you to Inkwells in town, who bound it for me for just £4.95 and thank you to everyone who has left me alone for the past few weeks in order to not get me all stressed out and angry. I am SO happy that it’s done and actually really proud of the result, so yes VERY happy Alex right now!

Prospective English and Creative Writing Students

I noticed a post by Aberystwyth University Entry on Facebook saying that they’d had a request from someone wanting to talk to an English and Creative Writing student. Well, here I am and have been for the last three years! If anyone has any specific questions regarding my course and wants an honest student’s answer, then simply comment on this post and I’ll get back to you asap.

Easter

Well, I am just sick to death of the sight of chocolate! I honestly ate so much yesterday that I wanted to puke and there is STILL so much left. Hayley and Annica didn’t go home because they still have so much dissertation to do and home is a distraction for work, on the whole. I still have my 2000 word-critical commentary on my story but I’m actually pretty chilled about it, which is why I’ve had a week off from work and just relaxed at home, spent time with my family and boyfriend. This week, I am going to resume research for the commentary though. Motivation will arrive, I’m sure…

The Best Of Aberystwyth

I was contacted via Twitter by a lady called Jill Cahill, who runs the website thebestof.co.uk/aberystwyth, which is an information service for all things going on in Aber. It’s probably actually pretty useful for prospective students to have a look at but anyway, she contacted me personally, asking if I would contribute to their blog. It may sound a little silly but I felt quite honoured and proud that someone I don’t know wanted me to write for them because after all, that’s what I really want to happen, when I leave uni (ohgodit’ssosoonnow) and enter the real world. So, naturally I did write about the freak summer weather Aber is currently enjoying and how the town have flocked to the beach every day, making it feel like a small Spanish or Greek island. She approved and published it, so I now have something else published online, which I’m really pleased about.

Creative Writing Project Done

I have FINALLY finished my 6000 word-story for my writing project. Lauren and Becky are going to look over it for me but thank god, I can stop thinking of intelligent original story ideas! Anyone reading this who is thinking of studying English and Creative Writing and wanting to take the Creative Writing side all the way to the end (which actually so many people decide against by the end of the second year!), you’re gonna be elbows-deep in creative wonder and stress, if the characters won’t do what you want, for the whole of your third year.

Journalism

I just wondered if anyone had seen my new blog? I think I did post a link to it a while back but for anyone who is interested in journalism, it is an essential thing to have. Well, it’s certainly a contributing factor. You also need contacts and confidence and often a good degree but blogging, certainly blogging about the sort of thing you want to report on in the future, is something that will make prospective employers think “wow, he/she has actually done some work off their own back!” My new blog URL is http://showmesomethingdifferent.wordpress.com/

You’ll see that it does contain a lot of reviews and that’s what I’m trying to do. Review every song, album, film, book, gig I come across. Fingers crossed, it might help me one day soon!

Back from home

Had a great time at home and loved seeing everyone again. I couldn’t believe how much my kittens have grown! I knew they’d be bigger but my god, they grow SO fast! They’re still incredibly cute, of course and in their heads, they’re still little babies. As predicted, I didn’t get all that much work done at home. I took some library books home with me and did a little bit of research but this essay of doom, as I’ve taken to calling it, is in on Friday, so now I’m back, I’m getting cracking right away!

Too much work!

I have so much to do, it’s insane. I’ve realised now that you don’t realise how much work third years have until you actually get there! As well as my writing project, which of course is an ongoing stress throughout the whole year, I’ve also now been set a 3000 word essay for Romantic Eroticism, in on March 9th! At the moment, I’m wondering how I’m going to do it without losing my sanity but as I write this, I’m also writing up a to-do list. Not a happy to-do list. A to-do list with no mention of the word “fun” at all. I am going home very soon though, so that is something to look forward to. Although I’ll be optimistic, I know in my heart that I won’t get any work done there, so I’m trying to get as much done before. Anyone reading this, wondering whether or not to go to uni, I would still recommend you go! Honestly, it’s awesome until you get to the last part!
